MHAction leadership teams across the country are continuing to build our power to push for issue campaign wins in 2022 and beyond. We are excited to share some key wins and initiatives underway. This week, we'll be sending around updates around the powerful time we had in Albany, New York on May 9th to 11th. Please keep your eyes out for pictures and a write up from our Legislative Days of Action.
In New York:
Our very own New York Community Organizer, Yvonne Maldonado, was interviewed by USA Today about the hard financial positions members of our communities are put in by predatory land developers. While buying a manufactured home is often portrayed as a lower-cost alternative to traditional housing, the article covers the often large, hidden costs that come from the ways in which many Americans are forced to seek the financing for their homes.
The article goes on to discuss Yvonne's journey from being a resident to becoming involved with MHAction's organizing and how she trains community leaders across the state to fight for housing justice in their own communities as well.

In Iowa:
Iowa community leader, Matt Chapman, details the necessity of why our communities must continue organizing in the face of the gutted House File 2562, which promised to help protect manufactured housing communities.
Unfortunately, the bill fails to include critical protections for our communities. However, the bill would not have even been heard without the hard work and dedication of our community members to organize for their right to affordable and dignified homes.

In Idaho:
Community leaders in Idaho are speaking out to raise awareness against the predatory practices they are experiencing after their community was bought out by Capital Investments LLC, a corporate land developer who almost immediately doubled lot rent and began issuing eviction notices. Capital Investments, under the guise of "improving the community", has made considerable efforts to rezone the community to allow commercial building, and has taken advantage of month to month leases to attempt to skirt around Idaho law requiring 90-day advanced notice of evictions.

Legislative Day of Action:
MHAction community leaders are going to Albany, NY, from May 9th-11th to make our voices heard in front of the New York State Assembly.
Our time together will include legislative meetings to push for increased rent protections and to prevent corporate developers from buying out our communities. During our legislative meetings, MHAction members will also be joined by members from Housing Justice for All. We will be calling on members of the New York State Assembly to stand with us and support the following pieces of legislation:
(Assembly Bill A6755) This proposal would further clarify and strengthen New York's existing rent justification law for manufactured home communities by requiring community owners to be more transparent and concise regarding their justifications involving rent and fee increases.
(Assembly Bill A6231) This proposal would further clarify the process by which residents, local non-profits, and public entities could purchase communities when they go up for sale. These clarifications would help stem the tide of predatory buyouts of our communities.
On May 10th, following the legislative visits will be a celebratory artist exhibition and panel at the Albany Institute of History and Art, including our very own community leaders, Betz Clair and Gail Travers!
