Maria Becerra

My name is Maria Becerra, and I currently reside in Cinderella Mobile Home Park located in Paramount, CA, where I have been living for the past year. I moved here after being compelled to leave my previous community due to escalating rents in Los Angeles. The affordability of housing was a vital consideration in my decision to transition to a manufactured home, as homelessness was my only alternative. After encountering numerous difficulties in securing affordable housing, I discovered manufactured homes and took the opportunity to purchase one in Cinderella.

Since my relocation, I have witnessed substantial increases in both rent and utility costs, which is particularly alarming given that I live on a fixed income. I am concerned that if these expenses continue to rise, I may no longer be able to sustain my home. Many seniors in my community share this anxiety, feeling caught between the dilemma of paying rent or affording food and medications. I have even engaged in discussions with other seniors who have expressed thoughts of ending their lives rather than facing the financial strain imposed upon them.

The management of our park has changed since my arrival; the former manager, who also served as the real estate agent, has passed away, resulting in the appointment of a new manager. This transition has introduced additional obstacles to communication between residents and the owner, complicating our efforts to address issues and seek transparency within the community.

Upon moving in, I was informed that my rent would be $1,150, which was already higher than what many residents were paying. Currently, my rent has escalated to $1,295. At the age of 78, I find myself allocating 80% of my income merely to maintain a roof over my head.

I would greatly appreciate witnessing numerous changes within my community, beginning with equity in land ownership, regulations on rent, and enhanced transparency regarding community developments. A protocol that addresses resident concerns would empower us to advocate for improvements and elevate our living standards.
